How is the Current Utility Bill Calculated?
The "Your Current Utility Bill" value represents the estimated average payment the customer is currently paying to the utility company. It is calculated using this equation:
(current cost per kWh x average monthly consumption) = current utility bill
This equation consists of two numbers. Click the links below to jump to the section explaining how each one is calculated:
You are also able to view how the bill is estimated to increase over the next 25-30 years using the slider just beneath the bill:
These increases are calculated using the utility escalation percentage. This is the percentage that the utility bill will increase by each year. Our proposals will default to 4%, but you can view and adjust your proposal's utility escalation in the sidebar:
Average Monthly Consumption
The Average Monthly Consumption is found by dividing the customer's annual consumption by 12 to get an average per month (annual energy consumption ÷ 12 = avg. monthly energy consumption).
The customer's annual energy usage is estimated using the data provided during customer creation. It can be found on the proposal, by opening the graph page editor:
Current Cost per kWh Rate
The current cost per kWh is the estimated cost per kWh that the customer is currently paying to their utility company. It is important to remember that this number is not the same as the number shown on utility bills, as those only account for the energy cost. The current cost per kWh on the proposal takes into account the entire utility bill, including both energy and fixed charges, as well as any applicable taxes.
The data we use for this value comes from our utility company database, which is always being updated by our Utility Research team.
Utility information found on our proposals come from research done by our Utility Research team. Utilities already listed in Solo are reviewed regularly with our most popular utilities being updated semiannually or even quarterly in some cases, and new utilities are being added constantly. Utility pricing updates are gathered from the specific utility company’s website and/or by phone, talking with solar representatives from the Utility.
