What does Solo require for a metal & steel structure engineering request?

All required images must depict the required element in the space below the proposed panel placement, with measuring tape.

Rafter Spacing

  • Rafter spacing is the horizontal distance between the parallel rafters measured from one rafter's center to the next one.

  • The standard roof rafter spacings measured on-center are 12″, 16″, and 24″

Rafter Depth

  • Rafter depth is the vertical distance between the top and bottom edges of a roof rafter.

  • The most common available lumber sizes used in roof framing include 2″×4″, 2″×6″, 2″×8″, 2″×10″, and 2″×12″

Overall Attic

  • Overall Attic is the space or room at the top of a building, under the roof, often used for storing things.

  • The most common attic/truss types used in roof framing include Simple Fink, Queen, Howe, and Fan.

No Attic Access:

Most homes are required to have attic access, in the rare occasion that attic access is not present, access can be achieved through the below methods.

  1. Pulling back the soffit under the overhang of the roof.

  2. Removing the bathroom vent cavity and taking photos in the cavity spacing.

Metal and Steel Structures:

Metal and Steel structures require additional measurements and photo documentation for engineer review.

There are two types of steel structures, please fill out the respective form below:

Steel I-beam - measurements include span, spacing, width, depth, flange thickness, and web thickness.

Steel C and Z purlin - measurements include span, spacing, width, depth, thickness, lip, and perlin type.

NOTE: Madison, Wisconsin, and Reno, Nevada require additional photo documentation in order to pass per city requirements:

  • Rafter Spacing

  • Rafter Depth

  • Rafter Type/Overall Attic

  • Measurements of the top cord and spacing between support beams

  • Wood grade stamp of top chord

  • If to be built: blueprints/building plans from the manufacturer
